Research

The main goal of my research is to improve the understanding of the complex interactions between engineering, economics, and policy in electricity markets, and ultimately enable the transition towards a cost efficient and reliable zero-carbon energy system. I am particularly interested in integration of renewable energy and energy storage into a smarter electricity grid. Towards this end, I use methods from operations research and decision science combined with fundamental principles of electrical power engineering and energy economics. At a more general level, my research focuses on decision making under uncertainty in complex systems.

My research interests include:

  • Electricity market design
  • Grid integration of renewable energy
  • Energy storage, demand response, smart grid solutions
  • Energy system transition and decarbonization analysis
  • Planning and operation of low-carbon energy systems
  • Forecasting of wind and solar power
  • Stochastic optimization and decision-making under uncertainty
  • Large-scale optimization, modeling, and simulation

Current research projects include:

  • Price formation in zero-carbon electricity markets
  • Decarbonization of the U.S. power system
  • Risk management in electricity markets with high shares of renewable energy
  • Electrification and decarbonization of transportation fleets
  • Generation expansion and resource adequacy in electricity markets with renewable energy
  • Energy storage for grid integration of renewable energy
  • Hydropower as a flexibility provider in zero-carbon electricity markets
  • Improved analytics for urban energy distribution grids and smart building control

Recent research projects include:

  • Electrify Italy
  • The role of renewable energy and natural gas in the future Indian power grid
  • The role of energy storage in distributed power systems
  • Improved production cost models for power systems with renewable energy
  • Stochastic methods in power system operations with wind power
  • Competitiveness of nuclear energy in electricity markets with increasing shares of renewable energy
  • Wind power forecasting and its use in electricity markets
  • Agent-based modeling of electricity markets
